First dates can be a lot of fun, but they can also be very confusing – especially if you can’t work out what your date is thinking. Some men struggle to openly express their feelings, and this can leave the woman unsure if the date is going well or not.

1. “Should I lead the conversation or not?”
No-one wants to be the person who talks too much and doesn’t listen, but people also don’t want to come across as shy or disinterested – especially on a first date! Your date may be really enjoying the conversation, but it is likely that he is wondering if he should chime in with a story of his own or just sit back and listen.
2. “What will she tell her friends about me?”
If a man is on a date and he realises he really likes his date, it is very likely that he will ask himself this question. Everyone wants to make a good first impression, and most people realise that it is likely that their date will talk to their friends about how the night went. It is especially likely that they will ask themselves this question if something went wrong, such as spilling a drink on you or making a slightly offensive joke!
3. “Would my family and friends like her?”
Most people value the opinion of their close friends and family, and if the date is going well they may start to think about what it would be like to introduce you to their loved ones. This could be a good thing if you are coming across as a friendly, sociable person, but if you are coming across as a brash person who doesn’t listen it could affect your chances of a second date.
4. “Does she even like me?”
Most people are quite subtle on first days as they don’t want to come across as too forward. If you can relate to this it is likely that your date is wondering if you like them or not! After all most people are not overly confident, so it is likely that they are looking out for some kind of signal that you are interested. If you are interested in them and you’re not sure how to let them know, try putting your hand on their leg or leaning in close when they talk.
5. “What are her bad traits?”
If the date is going well your date may think for a moment that you seem perfect, but this thought is normally followed by the thought “wait – but what are her bad traits?” Everyone has a few traits that they seriously dislike, such as being selfish or being high-maintenance, and it is likely that your date will be checking to see if you are presenting any negative traits.
