Tips For Dating In Britain

Many women across the globe like the idea of dating an Englishman. They love the polite manners, charming personality and the sexy accent; anything sounds good when a British man is saying it!

However, dating in Britain is unlike dating in other countries. Every place has its own culture, and Britain is no different. Here is some more information about what it is like to date in Britain.

1. How Formal Is It?

Dating is less official in Britain than it is in other countries, such as America. In other countries there are often specific rules of etiquette that should be followed, such as calling your date back after going on a date. However, dating in Britain is more relaxed; you might meet up with a guy for a drink, and you could be unsure if you are hanging out as friends or as a date. This can take the pressure off dating, but it can also make you feel less certain about where you stand.

2. How To Meet People

Meeting people in Britain is pretty similar to meeting people in other countries. British people often meet their dates while they are out at a club, pub or bar, or maybe they will meet someone through a friend-of-a-friend, or through work. Lots of British people also use dating websites, or they meet people through hobbies and classes, such as a cooking class or a spinning class. There are lots of different ways to find a date in the UK!

3. Making The First Move

In Britain it isn’t expected that the man will make the first move, as is customary in many other countries. In other countries, men will regularly ask lots of women out for a date, but in Britain men can be seen as desperate if they aggressively ask out lots of women, so they only ask if they are really interested. Women also ask out men a lot!

Gwyneth Paltrow famously made this comparison, saying “If someone British asks you out, they’re really going out on a limb, whereas in America it happens all the time.” At least this way you know that if a British man asks you out, he must be pretty interested in you!

4. Drinking While Dating

In lots of countries, people don’t want to come home from a date feeling tipsy or drunk, but in the UK drinking during a date is totally acceptable. Attitudes towards alcohol are fairly relaxed in the UK, and lots of dates will typically include a drink, such as going to a bar or a restaurant. However, lots of people choose not to drink in the UK, so if you don’t drink you won’t struggle to find a British man who doesn’t either.

5. Dating Other People

In lots of countries with less formal dating scenes, it is totally normal to date more than one person at once – especially during the initial stages of dating. However, in the UK it is frowned upon to date more than one person – even during the casual stage! Monogamy is expected from couples who have only gone on one date, unless one person makes it clear that they are not interested in the other person. This makes it easier to start relationships, but it also means you need to be upfront and honest if you are not interested in the person you are dating.
