Should You Have Sex On The First Date?

Sex on the first date is a hotly debated topic. Some people follow the old ‘three date rule’ where they wait three dates to be intimate, while other people think that sex on the first date is a good way to find out about compatibility.

So is it good or bad to have sex on the first date? And should you do it?

Here are a few things to consider about having sex on the first date.

1. Sex On The First Date: It Can Be Fun

Whatever you do sexually only affects you and your date – so if both you and your date are happy to have sex on the first date, go ahead! This actually might be more common than you’d expect; in fact, a recent study found that over one third of singles do have sex on the first date!

Sex on the first date can be a lot of fun; it can feel exciting to sleep with someone new, and if there is chemistry you could have an amazing time. Just make sure to stay safe and protected, especially if you don’t know the other person’s sexual history.

2. It Can Be Inconsistent

While sex on the first date can be a lot of fun, it can also be pretty inconsistent (especially when compared to sex in a long term relationship). You could meet someone who you have great chemistry with – and then your next date could be someone you are incompatible with sexually.

For some people this is fine, but it can be upsetting for romantics who prefer comfortable, compatible sex with someone they know well. If you can relate to this, consider removing the sexual aspect for a while so that you can see if there is a romantic connection.

3. Be Careful Not To Lead The Other Person On

If you and your date are both happy to have casual sex, that is great news – but if you want something casual and the other person wants something serious, don’t lead them on. Be honest about your feelings and intentions, and let the other person decide if they want to continue seeing you. If they decide to move on you may feel a little upset, but this allows you both to be truly happy in your dating lives.

4. It Might Not Be For You

If you decide having sex on the first date isn’t really your thing, that is totally fine. Your sexuality is your business, and no-one else can tell you how to behave or act. The only two things that really matter are that you are happy with the choices you are making, and that you are staying safe. Just do what feels right for you!
