Moving On From Unrequited Love

Moving On From Unrequited Love

Unrequited love sounds romantic and beautiful, but in reality it can be very painful. Loving someone who doesn’t love you back can feel devastating, especially if you still speak to them on a regular basis. Thankfully it is possible to move on from unrequited love, although it may take time.

Here are four tips to help you move on from unrequited love.

Moving On From Unrequited Love

1. Accept The Rejection

The first thing that you need to do is accept the rejection. This will hurt a lot as your heart has been broken, and you may even feel physical symptoms because of the distress, but it is important to face up to the rejection so that you can move on.

But how can you do this? A big part of accepting rejection is accepting that the other person will never be interested in you in a romantic way, instead of looking for evidence that a relationship may happen in the future. When you do accept that the other person isn’t interested, it will be much easier for you to get closure and move on.

2. Consider The Other Person’s Feelings

This may not feel like much right now, but evidence has found that unrequited love can hurt the person who is loved as much as the other person. The study found that the rejecters suffered from anxiety, guilt and depression, especially if they are close to the person who has feeling for them. Many said things like “This is the first time I have hurt someone like this”, going on to say that they hated the feeling of causing another person to feel bad.

3. Remember That You Are Not Alone

The vast majority of people experience unrequited love at some point in their lives, so try not to feel too lonely or unloved. It isn’t an indicator of how likable or attractive you are; it just means that you fell for the wrong person. There is someone out there who will love you back, and that person will make you much happier in the long run.

4. Make Sure Unrequited Love Isn’t A Pattern

While most people experience unrequited love once or twice in their lives, if you regularly experience the feeling it could be an indicator of unhealthy behaviour on your part. This could be due to insecurity or previous relationships, but either way it is important to get to the root of the problem so that you can have a more positive dating experience in the future.
